There are a lot of inspirational quotes out there such as "Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans" and one the most used ones being "Carpe diem" meaning "Seize the day" but I recently made up my own saying, at least I haven't heard people saying it. (Although it carries basically the same message but I find the choice or words more suitable.)
Life doesn't stop.
The story of how I came across this saying is a sad one, however it was definitely a valuable experience and it is something we all must go through in life. This post might seem sad but I promise, it has a positive outcome!
One of the things I enjoy doing is finding inspiration and important lessons in every day situations, I for example wrote a floorball related analysis of the intro to Disney's "Frozen" a while back. I recently experienced something from which I didn't expect to learn anything, or at least not as soon as I did.
Only a week back, I drove home to my family to attend the funeral of my grandfather who at the age of 82 had to walk the stairway to heaven after a brain hemorrhage. I got the phone call from my mother a couple of weeks back saying grandpa was hospitalized. I was working and had five hours left of my shift, so I called my colleagues and they agreed to show up earlier to their shift so that I could leave earlier.
I went home that night, and early the next day I watched my grandfather pass away.
My boss at work hadn't been able to find someone to cover my shift later that day so shortly after all of that I had to go back to work for eight hours, which went better than expected except for the fact that I was exhausted.
This brings us to last week.
I went back home for the funeral, had lunch with my parents' and a couple of hours later we left for church, and what happened then was quite the ride. My brain had protected me through these last two weeks by setting up barriers, blocking my emotions and not letting me think too much about it so that I could focus on work. When I walked through the doors of the church and saw my grandfather's picture, all the barriers came undone and all the thoughts and feelings I had been repressing suddenly hit me. This was real and we were actually there to take farewell of grandpa.
When the ceremony was over I found myself standing alone in the church staring at his picture.
I was the last person to leave because everything was happening too fast for me, I wasn't ready to leave but still everything kept moving on, and this is where I made the realization -
Life doesn't stop.
This is also where all of this becomes relatable to every day situations and for me that translates to floorball. Do you want to become a better goalie, do you want to be better at running or do you want to be physically stronger? Do you want to lose weight, learn how to cook or make a career change?
Regardless of what your goals and dreams are, pursue them.
Don't put it up until tomorrow. Take the first step towards your goal today, right now. Get out there and go for a run or sign up for a class that you want to take. Go to the store and buy a set of chef knives, or whatever it might be.
My goal is clear - I am going to be one of the best goaltending coaches in the world and I will continue taking the steps necessary for me to achieve my goal.
When I woke up earlier today I had set my mind on going running, but it then started pouring with rain. What I did before I finished writing this post was, I got dressed and went running in the rain, and it was great. If you haven't tried it, I really recommend it. Challenge yourself outside of your comfort zone, take a metaphorical run in the metaphorical rain!
Don't leave till tomorrow which you can do today.
Life doesn't stop.
To end things on a happy note, here is a picture of me looking happy after the 2014 WFC!
